'NAVCHETNA' an institution for the visually challenged children is working in the royal city of Patiala for the last few years. In 2008 a few like minded citizens gathered to do something that would bring about a change in the lives of children who were suffering with disabilities. Keeping their requirement in mind an organisation was established. Their mission was to spread new awareness so the organisation was named NAVCHETNA. In this context it was further felt that the educational facilities for the visually challenged children were not enough. Moreover, the awareness about this in our society is also very low. Sometimes even the parents are not aware of the ways of teaching such children and because of which some of them do not get education at all or in some cases their education gets delayed. Due to this they face difficulties in becoming self dependent and earning becomes a major problem. Thus the society decided to start a school for the blind children. Along with the school, a hostel was also established for the students from outside Patiala. It was decided that education, books and uniform will be free for all. Free pick-up and drop will be provided to the day boarders and boarding and lodging facility will be provided to the hostellers. The main aim of NAVCHETNA is to build self confidence in its students which can help them become visionary citizens. The organisation also provides them knowledge in computers with softwares designed specially for the Visually Challenged which keeps them in touch with the latest techniques. Some recreational facilities like music, dance, indoor and outdoor games are also part of their day to day curriculum. NAVCHETNA Institute also runs a Braille Library which is a special language for the blind where they can read books by touching the embossed dots. The Institute has recently started a Digital Audio Library where books on the syllabus, general knowledge and literature are provided in three languages-Hindi, Punjabi and English. NAVCHETNA also takes up other promotional welfare activities for the general improvement of such children in the society. Such a big mission which can change the lives of so many people leading them to success cannot be achieved without the support of the society. To make this dream come true, we kept getting help from some favourable people and now beside casual donors we have more than 700 regular donors and more are welcome to join the NAVCHETNA family.
